Because 5 axis milling turning functionality is getting more and more complicated, it is now harder to define in a clear line whether a machine is a mill turn machine, milling center, or a machining center anymore. The manufacturers of these machines now installed many additional but powerful accessories unto their milling model to enhance the working capacity. The milling machines can do turning at the same time, and sometimes these upgraded machines can even do boring or tapping. A 5 axis machine, no matter it is a 5 axis machining center or turning center, it must be controlled by computer numerical system. Because only with the CNC based controlling method, the multiple axis can work synchronically together with the existing mill turn features.
A CNC mill turn machine is also called a CNC milling center. That is a machine tool that utilizing turning method as the basis to rotates a work piece on an axis of rotation in order to perform various machining operations such as cutting, drilling, deformation, and facing. Other works also include turning and these machining processes are conducted with the cutting tools that apply to the work piece and to create an object with symmetrical shape. The moving axis is driven by the primary spindle. Some may wonder why mill and turn are integrated together. Well, in the old days, turning is only conducted on a turning machine. So, it was a simple purpose lathe per se. When people need to do some other jobs such as milling, they have to move the same work pieces to other working tables of other machine tools since milling procedures was conducted only on the milling machines in the past. These two types of cutting methods were rarely integrated due to the barriers in technology then. But now since the motor and power issues are taken care of already, the integration become not only natural, but also mandatory for most manufacturers.
Speaking of the multiple axis working, machining centers are the most obvious image in the mind of industrial insiders. Machining center is one of the most efficient ways of metalworking solution in the industry. Among all the classifications, there are mainly three types of construction methods that constitute a 5 axis machine. The same principle also applies to the 5 axis mill turn models.
Here we introduce those five axis structures as below. The first one is swing head. Swing head alone is a type that is able to achieve most processing angles. This kind of machines is considered convenient as well as other 5 axis compositions, such as four plus one, and three plus two machining centers. However, the latter two are with more practical advantages due to the existing three axis arrangement. Conventional machining centers are designed at least with three axes, namely, X, Y, and Z, and for both vertical and horizontal models, either type is okay to be equipped with other axes. Equip the three with additional axes can make the working zone much wider and deeper.
Working table in this type of model becomes another axis or even two axes. Because some may make the table rotational, while some may even install another track under the rotational work table to make it possible to move. The movement is synchronized. With the other additional two axes, the X, Y, and Z axis can move onto two new working dimensions such as A and B axis. This permits multiple angles of possible cutting processes. This situation is the same with the four plus one structure as well.
Not all the mill turn with multiple axes can deal with all the coming challenges. During the operation, sometimes if the size of work piece is too big, the situation hard to proceed. If the size is over the size of the work table, the machining would cause too much vibration to the machine body and thus deteriorate the precision frame of the machining centers. This is not an acceptable situation to both manufacturers and the following production lines. Therefore, manufacturers might add some other structural designs onto the body so as to make it with better rigidity during the milling process.
